[top]Conflicts and cases where CJKOS doesn't work

CJKOS *does not* work with Documents To Go, excepting versions 7 and 8 (or 8 and 9?).

If you want to use CJKOS, and still be able to have non-English European languages on your device,
you are probably out of luck. Due to the way CJKOS works (which is quite technical), if you have,
say, the word divorcee, but with the proper é, then it will convert from divorcée to divorc(..)
where the (..) represents a single Chinese character, thus making it anywhere between hard and
totally impossible to use non-English European languages together with CJKOS.

However, if you do install CJKOS and find that it's converted all your accents to characters, the
easy way to revert is to simply turn off CJKOS. There, at present, doesn't seem to be a solution
or workaround for having CJKOS and non-English European languages at the same time.

Additionally, when synching Chinese Characters written using CJKOS to your desktop, you will need
to either have your regional settings set to Chinese PRC (or Taiwan, if you're using Traditional
Characters), or use AppLocal on Windows in order to be able to see them. Otherwise they will
appear as garbage.

Finally, CJKOS was developed primarily to write Chinese. While it supports display of Japanese
Kanji and Kana, there's no way to write Japanese Kanji using it, and as such you'll need a
separate program if you plan on using Japanese a lot. You can write Kata-/Hiri- gana, but there's
no way to convert them to Kanji. J-OS (http://simple-palm.com/) is one option, but be aware that
the page is in Japanese, and there have been reports that you need a Japanese Bank Account for it.

The popular dictionary software for Palm, Plecodict, comes with character display and input built
in. Therefore you do not need any extra software to run Plecodict. However, you will need it if
you want to use Chinese in other applications - ie email, SMS, web browsing, etc.

[top]Windows Mobile / CE

CE Star - Perhaps the most useful tool to enable the use and reading of Chinese characters on the
windows mobile device. Its pretty easy to use, and even if you dont use the SIP/IME you can still
read Chinese on your device. It does however conflict with Pleco 2 at the moment and it also has
issues with MS Reader. This is not free but can be found at this site http://www.ce-star.com/

Monster Chinese - Is perhaps the alternative to CE Star. Its just as easy to use and has many
different SIPs/IMEs that can be used to type in Chinese. There have been rumblings of trouble
using this program on the newer windows devices but this is has yet to be confirmed This can be
found here http://www.mactiontech.com/english/monster_chinese.asp

D-ear input is a nice and very easy to use. Their are two that I know of the 10 key input and the
full keyboard. I have not found any conflicts using this program so far but its not one I use that

For simplicity's sake, and assuming you aren't going to be earning any money locally, the best
thing to do is probably use your bank card from home - obviously check you'll be able to, but
there can't be many cards that can't be used abroad nowadays. It might be worth opening a new
account at home with a bank that offers good rates on overseas transactions.

Many banks charge an international transaction fee, in addition to an ATM withdrawal charge. These
charges can be substantial.

However, if you shop around, you may find banks that don't charge such fee. Nationwide in UK is
one. Bank of America (US) has a relationship with China Construction Bank, and there is no fee for
withdrawing from Construction Bank ATMs with Bank of American ATM cards.

If you are from Germany, your EC card will work in China and you can withdraw cash. The fees are
quite low too

[top]Wire Transfer

Wire transfer, also known as T/T, is the fastest way to receive a large amount of money. You need
the destination bank's number, also know as the swift code and your account no. Banks usually
charge from USD20-USD40 one time for outgoing transfer. There is no limit as far as I know to how
much you can transfer. Large corporations transfer millions all the time through wire. Incoming
transfers have no charges.

Transferring out of China, however, is more complicated (to be discussed).

For wire, Bank of China is the quickest. Some of the other banks wire through Bank of China and
will take much longer. Bank of China transfer usually get through the next day.

One thing to note: make sure your name matches that in your passport! If you have a middle name on
your passport, but no middle name on your wire transfer, the transaction may not go through.

Exchange rates through the Bank of China is close to the market rate. If you try to withdraw your
cash in your native currency before exchanging to RMB, they will charge you 1%. If you convert
first to RMB, then there is no charge.

[top]Opening a Bank Account

If you are in China for China for a long-term stay, it may be more convenient to open up a local
bank account. The biggest banks in China are Bank of China (中国银行), Industrial and
Commercial Bank (ICBC - 工商银行), Agricultural Bank (农业银行), Construction Bank (CCB -
建设银行), Bank of Communications 交通银行, and China Merchants Bank (CMB - 招商银行).

Although probably all of the above banks can receive foreign wire transfers and exchange your
foreign currency, Bank of China (BoC) has special authority in deal in foreign currency. In
particular, for depositing a check from a foreign bank account, BoC charges a much lower
processing fee (about RMB10) than the other local banks and the processing time is much shorter
(5-6 weeks vs. 8 or more weeks), though still too long.

Bank of China accounts were always limited to the province/region where you opened them.

All you need to open a bank account is your passport, an address and a phone number. It could even
be a friend's address. They don't check and won't be mailing you anything. Though it might be
intimidating if you don't know Chinese, BofC has staff that speaks English and has many
non-Chinese-speaking customers..

For a long-term stay, it may be preferable to open a local bank account and use the debit card
they issue. To transfer money from foreign accounts, you can either wire them over or deposit a
personal check paid to yourself. Wire probably can happen within a day. Depositing a personal
check takes much longer, about a 1-month turnaround, but the fee is much less for a personal
check, less than US$10 paid to BofC vs. US$30 you would have to pay the banks on the two ends for
the wire. Once the foreign currency is in your BofC, you can convert it into RMB as needed.

Many banks have nowadays online banking. ICBC has an English interface, which makes handling
easier. CMB has Chinese only. HSBC has also an English interface, but it is not really a "local"
bank. Their deposit minimum now is RMB 100,000 - or you pay RMB 150/month account fees.

For sending money within China check the transfer fees. They are different from inner city and out
of city. They can be as high as 1%, usually capt at RMB50

25th May: 北京人在纽约 - Jiang Wen stars in a tale of Chinese emigrants making their way in
New York

This is a really nice show I think. We get to meet new arrivals in New York, 王启明 and wife
郭燕, following them from an incomprehensible airport to a dingy basement, picking up debts and
scaring off good Samaritans on the way. I'm sure plenty of us on here related to 王启明's
communication issues through the show.

We also get to meet a few supporting characters - the 无情无义 restaurant boss, the evil
sweatshop owner (who is that guy, I'm sure I've seen him elsewhere.)

I'm quite tempted to watch more of this, I'm keen to see how our friends make out. I think I've
watched a few episodes before but didn't get very far, possibly as at the time the lack of
subtitles was more of a hindrance. This time I'd say it's pretty easy to understand - the language
is all fairly standard and it isn't delivered very quickly.

I watched all of this series way back when it was first mentioned on the forums and found it
overall quite interesting, although in some places the story seems to jump around a bit and major
plot points seem to just happen out of thin air. One of the final scenes (perhaps the final one? I
forget) is quite interesting, as everything has come full-circle and you have 王启明 picking up
a friend from the airport and basically dumping him in the same place he was dumped in all those
years ago.

Actually, I think it's quite rare that interpreters have formal training. In the west at least,
most just tend to be well assimilated immigrants.

I think what makes a good translator is quite complex. I would say that a very good grasp of your
native language (which you're probably translating into) is extremely important. Then of course,
you need to have fairly good skills in the language you're translating from as well, although this
probably depends on the type of material you're doing. Why I'm saying "fairly" is because
understanding the meaning well enough to translate stuff doesn't necessarily mean that you can
speak it. Of the two people I ever known doing translation, no one could actually speak the
language they were translating from very well. Reading skills and other skills aren't necessarily
well correlated.

In particular, I think interpretation and translation are very different taks. I wouldn't doubt a
second interpreting between Swedish and English, but I could never do translation - my written
Swedish simply isn't up to scratch (anymore).

A degree in translation is probably much like a degree in creative writing : it won't make you a
good translator (writer/poet) if you're not set out to be one in the first place. Some people have
a talent for it, others just don't. If you've got the talent to be a translator (writer/poet),
then maybe such a degree could teach you some tips and tricks, but it's not like you couldn't have
figured them out on your own. Finally, I would think that translators, just like writers or
artists, are probably hired based on some kind of portfolio than the formal qualifications on
their CV - obtaining a degree in fine arts doesn't mean you're an accomplished artist.

I'm going in for negotiations with my company on Monday. We'll be talking about what my salary,
hours, etc., will be as a full time employee. I know how much to charge as a part-time translator,
where it's just a matter of how many characters I've translated, but as a full-time translator?
I'm not expecting much, but would like some ideas of what's a reasonable monthly salary to ask
for. My wife isn't too enthused about me doing this kind of work, as the pay will be much less
than teaching, but I honestly can't bear the thought of teaching again. Also, with any luck this
will only be for a year, and then I'll be on to much better things. Suggestions?

Don't know what the salary is in China, but if you're looking for a ballpark figure:
[going rate per character] x [number of characters that you can translate per hour] x [hours you
will work in a month] = [reasonable monthly salary].
(Quite a large margin of error here, but at least you get some indication.)

During my first years in the translation business (in Sweden), I made a point of not having taken
the exam for authorized translators. The reason? That test is on general, legal and financial
texts only. I stress that I'm specialized in other fields, namely medicine, chemistry and other
sciences.

Lazy that I am (aka financially incompetent), I work mainly through major translation agencies. In
that way, they handle most of the red tape and take the financial risk of any customers who don't
pay.

I feel no need for the history of translation, but I get a fair bit of it from Religious studies:
Bible. Business and other ethics thanks to my atheist worldview can't be improved on. They at
least match those of the professional association of which I'm a member. I would be interested in
reliable theories on how translation works in my head, and have looked for and asked for them at
several linguistics departments, but so far, I have found nothing. Maybe I should try neurologists?

My degrees are in engineering chemistry and linguistics, and I have worked for pharma companies in
non-translating capacities. The curricula for Translation Studies I've seen will award a degree
even if you don't have any speciality subject at all. I've been in the business for some time. Now
and then young people who want to work as translators contact me. Some hold a degree in
Translation Studies. My first question to them is invariably something like, "OK, where's your
expertise?" I usually get no reply.

I'm sceptical regarding Translation Studies as job training. It's like taking a course in
sculpture or car mechanics. You can't learn it all; you must have what it takes. The Swedish
prerequisites include an aptitude test. I haven't seen them, so I can't comment on them more than
that they are absolutely necessary to weed out at least the least suitable candidates. To be
qualified for the course for "facköversättare", ususally translated "professional translator",
but rather meaning a translator of non-fiction, several years of university language studies are
required. I find that almost ridiculous. I have not one completed semester in any of the languages
I work from, and use more time declining orders than accepting.

Wow, didn't know that the rates could run that high in Mainland China! Now I'm thinking I put
myself in a bad bargaining position by accepting the initial rate while working part-time! At the
time I just wanted to get my foot in the door and get some experience. Maybe now that I have some
experience I can bump up the rate (considerably). Hmm, probably have some hard bargaining ahead of
me . . .

Might be worth bumping that one up with any information you are able / willing to provide and see
what's happening now. That was two years ago and I suspect there are now plenty more foreigners
attempting to work as translators.

That said, if you feel that what you are getting is a reasonable reward for the time and effort
you put in, I wouldn't worry about it. Working at an agency is always going to pay less as there's
a middle man to consider.

I have just come back from a course in China and have in my notes what I believe to be:

不算

Meaning "not good". I am unable to find it in the dictionary and am wondering if I have noted it
down incorrectly. Does the term exist?

Thank you for that. Now I all of a sudden do remember having read it before in some book
containing 400 ambiguous HSK expressions used like "dont count on what I say, but pay attention to
what the manager says."

Another branch of meaning of 不算：

他说了不算 —— He has no say.
我说了才算 —— It is I who have the say.

In English he just has no "say", but In Chinese, logically he can say anything but what he says
will not be considered as a decision.

I have just found this old thread about 千千静听.

Nice player. It's called TTPlayer in English.

千千静听 synchronises lyrics with the music, creates a lyrics file in its program directory.
When a song is played, the current lyrics line is highlighted.

It easily finds lyrics on the web for Chinese and English songs, doesn't work so well with other
languages, even if the file properties are correct. I think it only uses 2 lyrics engines in China.

Here's an example lyrics file (邓丽君 - 使爱情更美丽.lrc), it creates and synchronises
(you can select whether you need simplified or traditional, it then automatically downloads the
correct one and converts the previously downloaded files).

I'm new to the forums, so a preemptive thank you.

I can't locate the first character in the screenshot below in either of my dictionaries, or,
online. It comes from the show Naruto, so I guess it is technically Kanji.

The second character is hun2, "spirit."

One of the secrets that you learn in the end of 1st year Arabic is that all words are derived from
each other, a characteristic of the Semitic languages. So by knowing the root consonants in a word
and the regular patterns they are pressed into, you can guess the meanings of words. Now... in
reality this is easier said than done. It gets easier after you do it a couple thousand times, but
it works according to very predictable rules. Modern textbooks are good at organizing new lexical
growth according to what students know already. (i.e. the vocabulary lists in Al-Kitaab vols 2 and
3).

The analogy with Arabic is that Chinese students are always told (correct me if I am wrong) that
they will begin to guess the meaning of single characters from their knowledge of other characters
because certain component parts are included in more complex characters. (I always understood the
debate about traditional vs. simplified characters this way at least, that simplified ones take
away a lot of linguistic meaning.) After how many characters would you say that this kicks in?
From what I have seen so far, it is by no means a regular predictable phenomenon as in the Arabic
roots. Sometimes you get clues, but not reliable ones.

I'd like to go back to something Atitarev said above:

I find developing listening comprehension is much harder in Chinese as well. I may not recognise
the words I know. In Arabic, I recognise them much easier - apart from a few difficult sounds, the
words in Arabic are longer and are easier to distinguish.

The obvious point to make is that Arabic has those derived words, but they are written using an
alphabet, so lexical recognition takes place in both listening and reading.

Any tips for increasing listening comprehension skills?

If in fact there are so many instances to hear Mandarin in near-written form of the language all
around you then just talking with lots of people is one answer. In Arabic your chances of hearing
sustained MSA (if not on the television or in a lecture or public event) as a beginner are low.
MSA is like a level of purity towards which only certain levels of Arabic speakers who identify
deeply with the language strive to attain. For the first couple years in Arabic even when living
in an Arab country, diglossia is a blessing, since finding instances that reproduce the level of
language used in the MSA classroom is very difficult.

At one time there seems to have been a debate about standardizing a colloquial form of Arabic. I
imagine that that debate was DOA, given how attached many people are (1) to the complex grammar of
Arabic and (2) the cult of regional particularity in the Arab world. Textbooks nowadays often
ignore points of grammar in the beginning just to get the students communicating.

Intuitively, listening comprehension would be the hardest one. What about writing in Chinese? Even
though I live in the Middle East, I almost never write in Arabic. Part of it is that so much
interaction between people takes place verbally.

Let me explain why I think Chinese is harder to understand by listening.

When we go through the list of new words, eg. using "New Practical Chinese Reader" textbook, they
usually make sense when you see both the character and know the pronunciation, especially
one-syllable words, since there are too many homophones - complete or partial. I listen to audio -
text first, then new words. The words become alive in a context, in complete sentences.

For example the words 住 and 祝 are both pronounced [zhù] but are used differently.

我住在墨尔本。 Wǒ zhù zài Mò'ěrběn. I live in Melbourne.
祝你身体好。Zhù nǐ shēntǐ hǎo. I wish you good health.

The Arabic phrase:
أنا أسكن في ملبورن [Ana askun fi Melborn] - "I live in Melbourne". The word "askun"
clearly identifies the meaning of the 1st person singular, present tense of the verb "to live".
You don't even need to use "ana" (I), it's clear from the verb form. It doesn't sound like
anything else. There are homophones in Arabic but not as many as in Chinese. The Chinese zhù can
mean many things, either as a word or as word component.

For me personally, Arabic grammar makes better sense than to an English speaker because of my
Russian background, Russian has 6 complex cases, not 3 (it applies to nouns, adjectives, numerals
and pronouns), verbs are conjugated but we write as we speak and constant exposure doesn't allow
to forget the cases and we always pronounce them. Well, in Arabic, you normally don't write case
endings and spoken dialects don't use this feature.

أحب اللغة العربية - "I like Arabic"

Pronounced as [uḥibbu al-luġa(ta) 'l`arabia] but written as [hamza-ḥ-b hamza-l-ġ-(tāʼ
marbūṭa) 'l-`-r-b-y-tāʼ marbūṭa], thus writing only consonants, the only vowel-like letter
is tāʼ marbūṭa (ﺓ) and there are no long vowels/diphthongs here. I find writing is much
easier than reading here, as you need to insert the short vowels based on your knowledge when you
read.

In Chinese, you have to bring up from memory the characters, which just don't come up when you
need them, if you saw them many times or even wrote them.

It's just my learner's brief summary of differences in learning Chinese and Mandarin, everyone's
different. I used simplified characters. The shape of the traditional characters is not that
helpful and not always, many simplified characters used a different phonetic component or they
just to easy to remember without them. It's up to you, which you want to use (I don't want to
start this can of worms, SC vs TC).

booming in my opinion and there are plenty of resources.

Sadly, it's true about Arabic. The main reason being lack of standardisation of spoken Arabic.
Greece tried to do the same for a long time - they used ancient Greek in writing but people spoke
colloquial (a quite different tongue). Now they standardised modern Greek. I can see 2 ways to
make Arabic more learnable and popular.
1. Promote standard Arabic to speech (perhaps a simpler version mixed with common regional
colloquialisms), they managed to do that in China, Taiwan and Singapore, why not do it in Arab
countries? Produce movies, songs, entertainment programs, etc. in MSA! Some expressions, which are
used in speech would need to be included to make it a live and modern language. I read there are
some areas around universities in Saudi Arabia where MSA is used for spoken communication.
2. Upgrade regionalects to become standard, like the did in Greece. Will this be a death to a
common language for all Arabs? I don't think so. If a dialect is written and used in media and
taught, then it will be known. The words common to many dialects + some formal words could be
included, thus reducing the gap. This may still create a few new languages still but the core will
still be the same or similar. The reality is that standard Arabic is not spoken anyway.

Both methods would require agreement between Arabs on the government level (doesn't have to be ALL
governments), to please purists, Classical Arabic would remain for religious purposes.

by at light speed. That’s why you have to get obsessed with exposing yourself to massive

I'll third the suggestion for massive amounts of listening.

It's important to have a basic vocabulary of a couple of thousand words. How you get those
(textbook study, flashcards...) is irrelevant, as long as you have a basic vocabulary of common
words. Then it's about overloading yourself with listening.

I listen to podcasts and watch TV shows daily, like wushijiao, and have made awesome progress in a
year or so. True, I still can't fully follow most conversations and I'm totally lost sometimes,
but I went from only noticing a blurb of unrelated sounds to following conversations and
understanding what's going on, which is great progress.

Chinese, like few other languages out there, requires listening until your ears bleed. You need to
invest a lot of time in this.

In general, I used to think that the analogy between Arabic and its diglossia and Chinese and its

compared to other Chinese dialects and non-Chinese languages within China. The only slightly
difficult thing, for the average beginner or intermediate learner of Chinese, it can be a bit hard
to understand the regional varieties of non-standard Mandarin. There really aren't any CSL
materials aiming at helping learners understand how Shanghaiese pronounce Mandarin, or how Henan
people speak Mandarin...etc, while, from what I've read, there are quite a few materials
specifically aimed at teeaching colloquial Egyptian, Guld Arabic, Iraqi Arabic...etc. Correct?

Rezaf, do all people in Iran study Arabic? Aren't there a lot of loan words from Farsi that come
from arabic?

Yes, dialects have a much higher usage and status with Arabs, as they are more than just local
speech. Standard Arabic is taught at schools and is in the media but everybody is expected to
speak dialects, some dialects being more prestigious than others.

For the same reason, if you are in Egypt you need to speak Egyptian (Cairene being more
prestigious).

No, no. A mother daughter relationship is very different!!!! This is referring to the relationship
with the man. So maybe 好 could be interpreted as the respectful 子 (like in 孔子，孟子)
and so it's actually just saying one woman and one man is good, a triangle is just hell!

I agree with the "delicious" and "羊(sheep or goat)" , but not quite with the 大 (big).
Any way, the character has the feather a Chinese character is sopposed to have.

It is the most significant feather of Chinese characters, as I understand, that many of them just
enable you to "see" the meaning before actually reading them. That is what I like and why I like.

Hi all,

I just returned from America to the school I'm teaching at and I lugged a few yearbooks as well as
other various reading materials to form a library for my gao er (juniors in high school) classes.
The yearbooks are important pieces of the library since they portray school life in America (which
they are very interested in) and since I'm thinking of striking a deal with some local paper
publishers and having a series of classes culminating in the creation of yearbooks for the grade.
But one of the best places to start with this sort of idea is to first figure out how to say
"yearbook" in Chinese since I want to label the reading materials so the students will know what
they are.

First of all, the concept of "yearbook" doesn't really exist in China, especially as far away from
the East coast as I am. Thus, there really isn't a specific word for it. The closest I've found is
年鉴 which I believe carries the implication of an almanac with yearly statistics, and 年报，
which is translated as "annual" and I think has the implication of an "annual report." Broadly,
both of these words apply something that is published annually which I feel is an acceptable
description of a high school yearbook. However, not being a native speaker of Chinese I don't know
if 年鉴 or 年报 has too specific connotations to be applicable to a high school yearbook.

So I wonder if you guys out there can help address whether or not the above terms are applicable
to the English term "yearbook," or better yet, perhaps there is a Chinese forum member who went to
an international school in Hong Kong or Shanghai who has a yearbook and knows how to say yearbook
in Chinese.

Good recommendations by all.I'm going to collect all these suggestions and do the most logical
thing for this particular situation: I'll show my students the yearbooks, show them the possible
names for them, and ask them which is most fitting. I'll go with what they pick.

While I'm on the topic of yearbooks, I would like to submit another question for your
consideration: I'd like to explain superlatives which are ubiquitous in American yearbooks to my
students as well. Some are simple: Most Intelligent, Most Athletic, Best Actor. But does anyone
have recommendations for the English phrase "Most likely to ___?" One yearbook I have let the
students design their own goofy superlatives, like "Most likely to set falsely set off a
bioterrorist alarm" or "Most likely to be a single old spinster with 9 cats."

For example, the more conventional "Most likely to succeed", should I say 最可能会成功?

Hi all,

I am a sophomore college student in electrical engineering, and I want to take some time off
before i really get into the thick of my major so that I can boost my Chinese by going to Beijing,
China, and then practice w/Chinese friends at home.

What is the best way to go there for 6 months? I would love to teach, but I don't think that I can
get a Z-visa because I don't have a teaching degree and I'm only going to be 21 years old when I
wish to leave (May, 2007). From what I gather, a tourist visa is a 2 month maximum. I would like
to visit from May to December, and hopefully make enough money to at least pay SOME of the bills.
Any ideas on how I can get there and live legally (or illegally....) while not getting arrested
and/or maybe getting some decent work experience.

Without a TESOL degree or a BA you won't be able to work at "any" school, but there are definitely
some that will hirer you regardless.

You can also enroll in a university; they'll supply you with a student visa.

As far as saving money to pay off bills, stay away from big cities. =)

Im sure some places will employ you without a TESOL cert and no degree.

* study -- eg BLCU can give you a letter to give to the visa office to get your student visa. Not
all Chinese schools help you with a visa.

* volunteer, I saw a web page advertising this but you actually
had to pay to volunteer ???? weird

* homestay --- there are some homestay programs in which
an organisation set you up with accomodation and you teach em
English or something, don't know if they deal with visa's

* travel visa, I don't know about your country, but in Australia we can only get 30 days
some Australians have gone to Hong Kong and got a 3 month travel visa

I am not sure what country you're from but you can usually get tourist visas for up to 6 months.
Also while you're here you can extend them at least once sometimes several times.

If you go to HK first you can get an F visa which will give you at least 6 months (if US) and
sometimes a year if you're European. Once you move to a medium or large sized city you can pick up
off the books teaching jobs fairly easily. 10-15 hours a week would be plenty to live off.

Or you can be a student. Universities take foreign students of all ages if you just want to study
Chinese.

Actually take that (and supposedly the other visa types as well) with a grain of salt. As we
discussed in this thread on F visas, their availability changed recently.

I had to stop reading after page two, some of the comments being posted on here just; well I don't
know how to phrase it without stirring up a battle.

If you run your life based on "what you feel other people will think" about your actions then
you're not in control of your own life. Within moral reason, do as you please.

In my opinion it just comes down to insecurity when someone feels it's weird or strange to use a
language they dedicated countless hours towards mastering, especially with someone who has also
dedicated countless hours towards learning that same language, and IN CHINA.

If you can't speak Chinese in China to someone who knows (or is learning) Chinese then where can
you speak it?

I enjoy very much talking in Chinese to fellow students (Caucasians or Asian looking, whatever) -
I even feel a bit more confidence, as it is a kind of competition and less embarrassed about own
mistakes.

Someone mentioned their job... I teach english, so my job doesn't include chinese... and my home
time doesn't include chinese unless I'm watching a dvd or studying it... so my only chances to
speak chinese are out in public on weekends or on my way home from work. At a store, taxi,
whatever.
I find it difficult to find chinese friends who don't speak english or don't want to learn. It
seems everywhere I go (except food shopping and taxi rides) everyone wants to speak english.

Then, although this is dumb, I sometimes feel guilty if I don't speak english with them... I know
they've hardly ever or never spoken to foreigners, so i feel like i should "give them some"
english. I'm too nice.

I must say, I REALLY LOVE the chinese people who just assume I speak chinese and they only speak
chinese with me. These are usually lower-level workers, like the cleaning lady at our school,
she's so happy when I say 你好, or something simple about the weather. I don't think the chinese
employees even speak to her.

I'd be glad to speak chinese with anyone of any color.

I've been finding it rather difficult to know where in a sentence I should put the "了". And I
haven't really got a proper explanation on the subject when asking teachers and friends.

So, not. Once and for all. Can someone please tell me the difference in putting the 了 directly
after the verb, and putting it at the end of a sentence.

Take these two sentences for example:
你昨天去哪儿了?
去参加了一个中国的朋友的婚礼。

Why do you put the 了 in the end in the first sentence, but directly after the verb in the second
one.

actually, not everyone knows about 一日三秋 (i don't think). i think u could put it in a
letter like: 沒有你，我每天過得一日三秋‧i.e. without u, everyday seems like three
years (meaning, i really really really miss u)

i'm an american-born taiwanese, so u might want to ck this w/ someone who was born and raised in
asia. i hope this helps for now.

Just looked on Pleco-ABC and the meaning is as follows:
one day (away from a dear one) seems like three years. I'm gonna start using this when I talk with
my friends back in China...I really miss them!!

一日三秋 is a very common idiom that comes from Chinese classics "Shi Jin".

The original text:一日不見，如三秋兮
One day not see, like three autumns.
(One day apart seems three autumns.)

Today, more people say "一日不見, 如隔三秋", or in a shorter form, "一日三秋".

I would bet 10 bucks that more than average Chinese understand it. I just haven't met anyone who
don't understand it, though I didn't say it to everyone.

As a native Cantonese speaker, i use Chinese 15 hours a day, 365 days a year , and do it for a few
decades. I've heard some new revolutionary methods of learning language, but I haven't made any.

That's what happens when you type something 5 minutes after waking up and just let your computer
think for you... I just typed "guahuzi" and that is what my input came up with- didn't even bother
to look. Appropriate thread to do that on though. I'll change it to avoid confusion for when
people read it.

Gougou- According to my teachers and one friend no it doesn't. It means to cut your face off...
hmmm.... now I'm curious... Oxford has it too... I would maybe say regional thing but one is
Sichuan and one is Shanxi (xian). Alas this just proves that their is no "standard" in mandarin..

As far as I can tell we've got one but it's just a transparent image. I think it's time for

Chinanews, Shanghai, July 4 �C Newlyweds in Shanghai are willing to spend
a lot for their marriage. The Shanghai Marriage Celebration Association
recently published the result of a questionnaire investigation conducted
nationwide. The result showed that every newlywed couple in Shanghai
spends 187,130 yuan on average for their marriage celebration, 50,000
yuan more than that in Guangzhou and nearly doubling the figure in
Harbin, which stands at the bottom.
The report showed that every couple in Shanghai spends 60,000 yuan for
housing decoration, which makes up the most part of the marriage
expenditure. Buying furniture (20,000 yuan) and household appliances
(16,000 yuan) are also costly. In addition, every newly-wed couple spends
3,500 yuan for honeymoon pictures, 6,000 yuan for jewelry, 2,000 yuan for
clothes, and some 10,000 yuan for honeymoon trip.
A year ago, the survey from the Shanghai Marriage Celebration Association
showed that every new couple in Shanghai spent 160,000 yuan on average
for their marriage. In three years�� time, the figure rose by 30,000
yuan. Four years ago, it would have cost a new couple some 50,000 yuan to
arrange a marriage celebration.
Of course, not every couple can afford extravagant marriage celebration.
Related information showed that 50% of the marriage costs are shared by
parents. For those low- and middle-income families, expensive celebration
is nothing but a financial burden.

Chinanews, Beijing, Jun. 22 �C China��s National Statistics Bureau
commissioner Qiu Xiaohua said on Tuesday that in recent years, Chinese
government has gradually become more and more skilful at controlling the
country��s macro-economy. This will help China to attain the two major
goals outlined in the Eleventh Five-Year Plan for social and economic
development, namely to maintain a stable economic operation with a 7.5%
GDP annual growth, and to raise energy resource utilization efficiency so
that the amount of energy consumption will be reduced by 20% for each GDP
growth unit.
He made the statement Tuesday at the Fourth Overseas Chinese Forum.
Qiu said that in terms of the opportunity for the macro-control, the
government is now able to choose a right time to exercise such control by
observing the economic situation, so that the country��s economy can
maintain fast and stable growth within certain range.
At different times, the government will take a different approach to
exercise the macro-control policy and adopt appropriate measures to
either ��heat up�� or ��cool down�� the economy whenever the economy gets
��depressed�� or ��too hot��. In regard to the macro-control ��rhythm��,
such control is gradual and stable. It focuses on pre-tuning and
fine-tuning of the policy. As to macro-control principle, the government
follows a flexible strategy. Instead using different methods to tackle
different problems. At certain time, the developenet of some industries
will be encouraged while that of some others will be kept in hand. As
regards the controlling means, the government has learned lessons from
previous experiences and uses economic, legal and, if necessary,
administrative means to control the situation.
He said that China��s accelerating urbanization process and the policy of
building a new countryside would add new impetus for the country��s
economic development and help the government to achieve the goals of the
Eleventh Five-Year Plan.
In 2005, urban population accounted for 43% of the total population in
China, 4 percentage points lower than the world��s average, 15 points
lower than intermediate-level income countries and 35 points lower than
high-income countries. This shows that huge space exists for China��s
urbanization process. In 2005, the color TV, refrigerator, and washing
machine ownership ratios for every one hundred families in rural areas
were only 62.3%, 22.2% and 42.1%, respectively, of the relative ratio
figures in cities, or equal to the city��s ratio figures in the 1990s.
This shows that Chinese farmers still have a large potential consumption
power.
Chinese government��s policy of building a new socialist countryside will
speed up the economic development in rural areas. It will increase
farmers�� income, and help turn the large potential consumption power
into real demand in the countryside. It will upgrade farmers��
consumption level, stimulate rural market, and in the end boost the
country��s whole economic development and make such development proceed
continuously and stably.

A tourist discovered a freshwater jellyfish, an endangered rare
coelenterate reputed as "underwater national treasure" and "giant panda

Duo Ji, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and chief
engineer of Tibet's Geology & Mineral Resources Exploration Bureau,
discovered this mineral water at Qumaduo Village in a field survey. After
more than three years of observation and examination, researchers have
confirmed that this village has high-quality purely natural composite
mineral water resource.
The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau is globally recognized as a pollution-free
region with neither domestic nor industrial pollution. Its advantages in
natural environment and unique geological conditions make it the last
pure land in the world without pollution.
Asked whether exploitation of the above mineral water resource will
endanger local ecology, Duo Ji said mineral water resource at Qumaduo
Village is super huge and the exploitation volume will be limited to the
smallest outflow. At the same time, they will reinforce protection of
natural environment at the springhead to preserve local ecology for the
long run so as not to destroy local ecological environment.

Danjiangkou Bridge to complete construction in July

Danjiangkou Bridge, midline part of the south-to-north water transfer
project, has finished the docking of its main pier on June 6. On the left
bank, the girders of the bridge approach are urgently moulding while on
the right bank, the T-shape girder has been linked and the construction
has entered a peak period. Two sections of the bridge will be joined by
the end of this July and open to traffic by October. This bridge is a
package project of dam heightening of the south-to-north water transfer
project as well as an important passage in construction. It will play a
vital role in the construction, material and stuff transportation for the
midline project. The bridge is 1,128.25 meters in full length with
estimated investment totaling 100 million RMB (US$12.5 million).

Ferry on Bohai Strait to start trial operation

June 4 - A new ferry service that can carry trains, motor vehicles and
passengers, and cut more than 1,500 kilometers from a journey between the
cities of Dalian and Yantai, is to begin trial service in August.
The ferry service, which will cross the Bohai strait in north China and
link the two port cities in Liaoning Province and Shandong Province, cost
more than 3 billion yuan (about 370 million U.S. dollars) to build, a
local Chinese official announced.
Currently trains and vehicles traveling from China's northeast region to
the Shandong Peninsula have to go through Shanhaiguan in Hebei Province
and then to Tianjin, a journey of 1,779 km.
Xu Weiguo, deputy governor of Liaoning Province, said the first ferry
will be delivered to Dalian in July.
The trial operations are expected to last two months, said the deputy
governor.
The ferry will travel 170 km across the Bohai Strait shortening the
journey from Shandong Peninsula, one of China's economic powerhouses, to
the re-developing northeast China by 1,609 km.

Peach core vases made by farmer in Shandong

59-year-old folk artist Ding Yuanzhong in Rizhao City, Shandong Province
exquisitely created two 3.16-meter-tall vases with 2,800 peach cores on
the morning of May 25. As "He Ping" (peach core vase) rhymes with "peace"

Chinanews, May 17 �C New 2006 Cadillac models, the CTS and SRX vehicles,
were introduced by Shanghai General Motors Corp in China on April 25, the
changes in the mode of arousing attention among the public.
"Actually, all the 2006 models of Cadillac released recently have changed
into imported versions," Liu Yuehai, supervisor of Shanghai General
Motors Corp's marketing and sales division, said. The company introduced
the first domestically produced Cadillac model in China in March, 2005.
According to a report of China Business News, the GM's move was aimed to
avoid the higher auto tariff rates for the imports since it claimed its
Cadillac models assembled in China as "domestically produced vehicles."
According to a regulation on auto parts tariff implemented since April,
2005, the standard for "domestically produced vehicles" was lifted and if
the assembled vehicles could not reach the standard would be imposed the
same tariffs for the imports as "completed vehicles."
"The market of Cadillac vehicles does not have many audience and many key
spare parts have to rely on importing because they have no advantage of
scale production in the domestical market. It is hard for the vehicles to
reach such standard," an insider from Shanghai GM said.
"As a matter of fact, we have all along paid tariff at a rate for
"completed vehicles" after the cars were assembled in China."
Not only Cadillac, other luxury car brands such as Huachen-BMW,
Beijing-Benz and Volkswagen are faced with the same problem. Volkswagen
plans to introduce locally produced vehicles in the future.
Citing an auto analyst, the report said that luxury car brands with low
production would suffer from the impact, especially the locally produced
Benz.
Director of Information Office of Beijing Benz-DaimlerChrysler, Ruan Wei
said that the company would restructure its production lines of
Beijing-Benz in the future.

Marriage is on Yao Ming's summer agenda.

"But the wedding day hasn't been scheduled as summer is a busy match
season for him," Yao's agent Zhang Mingji told Youth Daily on Sunday.

It's widely known that Yao and his fianc��e Ye Li, who plays on the
women's national basketball team, will apply for a marriage certificate
within a couple of days, and a wedding party will be held this month, a
month earlier than scheduled, said the report.

Ye Li is also a Shanghai player.

But Yao Ming, his relatives and Zhang refused to comment on the rumor.

Zhang told the newspaper that "Yao puts the honor of playing for the
nation in first place and will obey the plans of the man's national
basketball team."

Yao flew back to Shanghai, his hometown, Sunday for a short family
reunion and get-together with friends.

Tuesday morning, he will fly to Beijing in his role as an ambassador of
the 2007 Special Olympic Games. Yao is scheduled to fly back to Shanghai
Tuesday night.

The Greg Oden-Kevin Durant debate that lasted all spring will end quickly
Thursday night.

Then the NBA draft gets interesting.

Oden and Durant will be gone after the first two picks, headed to their
Pacific Northwest destinations. No worries about going to an unfamiliar
place, or lengthy waits while TV cameras capture their agony as teams
pass over them.

Other players only wish they had it as easy.

"It is annoying. I wish I was in a situation like Greg and Kevin were in,
where they just automatically knew where they were going," guard and
longtime Oden teammate Mike Conley Jr. said. "They can start looking for
houses or whatever. I have no kind of luxury like that."

Conley could go No. 3 to Atlanta -- unless the Hawks trade the pick. Or
he could still be available when the Hawks use their second lottery
selection at No. 11 -- unless that one has been dealt.

Al Horford, Joakim Noah and Corey Brewer, the core of Florida's
back-to-back national championship teams; Georgetown forward Jeff Green,
and China's Yi Jianlian face the same uncertainty heading into one of the
deepest drafts in years, one that could be shaken up by trades.

"I don't think a lot of people put a lot of focus on that, after the
first two draft picks, because it's going to be fun to see where people
end up," Green said. "There's a lot of talent in the draft. In my eyes,
we feel like maybe the deepest draft since LeBron's draft (in 2003)."

The Portland Trail Blazers have the No. 1 pick, and they haven't said
publicly which way they're leaning.

Oden's agent, Mike Conley Sr., said he had not spoken to Portland general
manager Kevin Pritchard since last week. Pritchard has not given any
indication that Oden will be the top choice, the agent said.

"He has not telephoned me or anyone who works for me guaranteeing Greg is
our guy," Conley said.

And if the Trail Blazers were still flip-flopping Wednesday, they weren't
the only ones.

"I'm taking the big guy," Washington center Spencer Hawes said when asked
what he would do. "Look who wins the championships. Nothing against
Kevin, but you just got to look at the backbone of championships."

So then, Oden over Durant?

"I'm not saying that, I'm not going to go that far," Hawes said.
"Conventional wisdom would say that you take the big guy, but that's a
tossup, that's a tough one to say. I can't say on the two individuals,
but next year if it's a similar scenario I guess I go with the big guy.
But I don't know, this year I guess I'm a man divided."

It's not an easy choice. Oden tested better at predraft camp, Durant had
the sharper workout in Portland.

Dominant big men are usually impossible to pass up, and late Wednesday
night ESPN.com reported, citing unidentified sources, the Trail Blazers
had let Oden know that he's their man.

"That's definitely not the case," Conley Sr. said.

Oden has been compared to Bill Russell for his rebounding and shot
blocking, and he led Ohio State to the national championship game even
while failing to regain full strength after surgery on his right wrist.

"You can see why he'd be a No. 1 pick," Durant said. "I think he's one of
the best centers to come out of college. He's quick and agile, he's
7-feet, 250. I've never seen that in a center before."

Players like Durant don't come around often, either. The swingman from
Texas was the college player of the year after averaging 25.8 points and
11.1 rebounds, ranking fourth nationally in both categories. And if he
falls to Seattle at No. 2, he'd make a terrific consolation prize.

"Without question, Kevin Durant's the most talented player in this
draft," Texas A&M point guard Acie Law said. "But if I'm building a
franchise, as most teams at the top of the draft are, you can't pass up a
guy you can just build your team around. Because there's guys in the
league that can score 20, 25 a game, like Kevin Durant can, but you're
not going to find a 7-foot manchild that can just patrol your line for
10, 12 years."

There's much more in this draft beyond Oden and Durant. Law said the top
15-20 players could become stars, setting up plenty of intrigue around
the remainder of the lottery.

The Phoenix Suns were hoping to move up, the Charlotte Bobcats were
possibly open to moving down, and the Trail Blazers were rumored to be
interested in landing a second lottery pick.

Green was surprised to be called to a Tuesday workout in Phoenix with
Brewer and Noah, even though the Suns aren't scheduled to draft until
well after the lottery. That shows there's interest in players after Oden
and Durant, with the Florida trio hoping to make the Gators the first
school with three top 10 picks in the same draft.

"We're just winners," Brewer said. "We know how to win."

Green was seated next to the draft's unknown, Yi, illustrating how much
the shape of the NBA has changed in the last two decades. The Big East
player of the year from the prestigious program was surrounded by maybe a
dozen media members, while Yi attracted a crowd about triple that.

Not that much could be learned. Speaking through a translator, Yi said
it's hard to compare him to other players in the draft, but that he could
have an advantage over some of them because of his international
experience.

Otherwise, he remains a mystery -- right down to his age. He's listed at
19, but has long been rumored to be older. And the 6-11 Yi wants to
pattern his game like power forwards such as Dirk Nowitzki and Kevin
Garnett, not like countryman Yao Ming, a center.

There are fewer doubts about Oden. He probably would've been the No. 1
pick last year without going to college if not for the NBA's age rule,
which requires American players be 19 years old and a year out of high
school to be eligible for the draft.

The only question now is whether he's still No. 1 -- or if it matters to
him.

"Important? It would be nice," he said. "To play in this league is a
dream of mine. Wherever I go will be nice."

NATO backs US missile plan on eve of Russia talks

Moscow - NATO's secretary-general mounted a stout defense of Washington's
missile shield plan on Monday, the day before meeting Russian President
Vladimir Putin when the issue is likely to top the agenda.

Russia has described United States' plan to place part of its missile
shield in eastern Europe as a threat and the issue has divided European
politicians with some saying it is vital for defense and others saying it
is misguided.

"You don't have to be Einstein to understand that 10 interceptor rockets
don't pose any threat to Russia and the Russian people," NATO's Jaap de
Hoop Scheffer said via an interpreter in a debate on Russia's Ekho Moskvy
radio station.

On Tuesday de Hoop Scheffer meets Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov
and Putin.

He underlined the shield was aimed at shooting down missiles fired by
'rogue states' such as North Korea and Iran, and that Russia also shared
these common enemies.

In echoes of the Cold War, Putin this month said he would order Russia to
aim its missiles back at major European cities if Washington went ahead
with the plan to site elements of the shield near Russia's borders.

"We were enemies and we tried to destroy each other but that era has now
finished," de Hoop Scheffer said on Monday.

The United States wants to place part of the missile shield in Poland and
the Czech republic.

As an alternative to the shield, Russia has also offered the United
States use of a Soviet-built radar station in Azerbaijan. The United
States said it would consider the offer although the Azeri radar station
could not replace the main missile shield.

Soccer boss elected Buenos Aires mayor

A millionaire soccer boss from Argentina's center-right opposition was
elected mayor of Buenos Aires in a run-off vote on Sunday, defeating a
candidate backed by President Nestor Kirchner.

With more than 73 percent of the ballots counted, 60.5 percent of voters
supported Mauricio Macri, a congressman and president of the country's
most popular soccer club, while 39.5 percent backed Daniel Filmus,
Kirchner's education minister.

"Change won in Buenos Aires today," Macri told a throng of cheering
supporters. "It's a change that proposes a different kind of politics,
different values."

Macri's victory catapults a leading opposition figure into one of the
country's key political posts, dealing a blow to the Argentine leader
ahead of this year's presidential election.

Highly popular, Kirchner had waded into the contest, hoping to broaden
his power base.

Analysts say the win will likely anoint Macri as the leader of a
fractured opposition struggling to gain ground on the center-left
president in the October 28 presidential race.

"This affirms Macri as the figurehead of the opposition," Joaquin Morales
Sola, a political columnist at the Buenos Aires daily La Nacion, said in
televised comments.

Kirchner has dominated Argentine politics since taking office in 2003,
consolidating power as he won credit for engineering the country's
economic recovery.

BIG LEADS

Public opinion surveys show Kirchner and his wife, a senator, holding
substantial leads in the presidential race, with either expected to win
easily. Neither has said if they will run, but Kirchner frequently hints
his wife may do so.

Macri was widely seen as a potential candidate in the presidential
election before he jumped into the mayor's race. He has hinted it might
be a first step toward a 2011 presidential candidacy.

Kirchner hand-picked Filmus to compete in the race in Buenos Aires, home
to some 2.8 million Argentines and an independent-minded electorate that
frequently votes against national trends.

Macri, 48, hails from one of the country's wealthiest and most
controversial families. His father, business tycoon Franco Macri, is one
of Argentina's richest men whose businesses flourished during the 1990s
under former President Carlos Menem.

Kirchner, who blames Argentina's 2001-2002 economic crisis on neo-liberal
economic policies implemented during the Menem years, had publicly warned
a Macri victory could mark a return of Menem's policies.

In the final days of the campaign, Macri got a public relations boost
from his role as president of the Boca Juniors club, where soccer great
Diego Maradona once starred.

On Wednesday, Boca won Latin America's Copa Libertadores tournament, the
equivalent of Europe's Champions League championship.

Iran: Russia may not let US use Azeri radar

TEHRAN - Russia has indicated it will not allow the United States to use
a radar station in Azerbaijan for missile defense against Iran, an
Iranian foreign ministry spokesman was quoted by the IRNA news agency as
saying on Sunday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in dispute with the United States over
the location in eastern Europe of a planned American missile defense
system, had offered instead to share a radar site in Azerbaijan.

But Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said Russia
had no intention of letting Washington use the station in Azerbaijan,
which has borders with Iran and Russia.

"It seems Russia does not intend to make decisions that may result in
instability and insecurity in a region that it is located itself in,"
Hosseini told a weekly news conference.

The United States told Russia on Thursday the Kremlin's offer could not
replace its plans to site the missile shield in eastern Europe to counter
any missile launch by Tehran.

The West fears Iran wants to make an atomic bomb but Tehran says its
atomic work is aimed only at generating electricity.

The United States says it seeks a diplomatic solution to the dispute, but
has not ruled out military action. Iran has threatened to strike US
interests around the world and Israel if attacked.

Hosseini said Putin's proposal was discussed with the Russian and
Azerbaijani ambassadors to Tehran.

"Iranian ambassadors to Russia and Azerbaijan have also discussed the
issue with both countries' officials," Hosseini said.

Washington plans to use interceptors in Poland and radar in the Czech
Republic, a configuration Washington says would be ideal for blocking any
missile, particularly from Iran, heading towards the United States and
most of Europe.

Russia has said the US scheme is a threat to its own security and that
the proposed US bases on its doorstep could be converted to more
dangerous uses in the future.

The project has also raised concerns in Iran, which says its missile
program is not designed to threaten the West.

Iran's Shahab-3 missile, with a range of 1,250 miles (2,000 km), is
capable of hitting Israel and US bases in the Gulf, Iranian officials
say. Iran has refused to recognize Israel since its 1979 Islamic
revolution toppled the US-backed Shah.
