Marriage on Yao Ming's summer agenda

(Shanghai Daily)
Updated: 2007-07-03 08:41

Marriage is on Yao Ming's summer agenda.

Chinese NBA star Yao Ming arrives Beijing for the promotion of the
selection of upcoming Beijing Olympic torch relay torchbearers.[CFP]

"But the wedding day hasn't been scheduled as summer is a busy match
season for him," Yao's agent Zhang Mingji told Youth Daily on Sunday.

It's widely known that Yao and his fiance Ye Li, who plays on the
women's national basketball team, will apply for a marriage certificate
within a couple of days, and a wedding party will be held this month, a
month earlier than scheduled, said the report.

Ye Li is also a Shanghai player.

But Yao Ming, his relatives and Zhang refused to comment on the rumor.

Zhang told the newspaper that "Yao puts the honor of playing for the
nation in first place and will obey the plans of the man's national
basketball team."

Yao flew back to Shanghai, his hometown, Sunday for a short family
reunion and get-together with friends.

Tuesday morning, he will fly to Beijing in his role as an ambassador of
the 2007 Special Olympic Games. Yao is scheduled to fly back to Shanghai
Tuesday night.

Chinese Online Class - Report: Blazers will pick Oden at No. 1

Sports / Basketball

Report: Blazers will pick Oden at No. 1

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-29 00:19

The Greg Oden-Kevin Durant debate that lasted all spring will end quickly
Thursday night.

Then the NBA draft gets interesting.

These recent handouts provided by their respective schools or teams show
NBA Draft basketball prospects from left: Arron Afflalo, UCLA; Morris
Almond, Rice; Stanko Barac, Siroki Brijeg; Marco Belinelli, Climamio
Bologna; and Corey Brewer, Florida. The NBA Draft takes place June 28 in
New York. [AP]

Oden and Durant will be gone after the first two picks, headed to their
Pacific Northwest destinations. No worries about going to an unfamiliar
place, or lengthy waits while TV cameras capture their agony as teams
pass over them.

Other players only wish they had it as easy.

"It is annoying. I wish I was in a situation like Greg and Kevin were in,
where they just automatically knew where they were going," guard and
longtime Oden teammate Mike Conley Jr. said. "They can start looking for
houses or whatever. I have no kind of luxury like that."

Conley could go No. 3 to Atlanta -- unless the Hawks trade the pick. Or
he could still be available when the Hawks use their second lottery
selection at No. 11 -- unless that one has been dealt.

Al Horford, Joakim Noah and Corey Brewer, the core of Florida's
back-to-back national championship teams; Georgetown forward Jeff Green,
and China's Yi Jianlian face the same uncertainty heading into one of the
deepest drafts in years, one that could be shaken up by trades.

"I don't think a lot of people put a lot of focus on that, after the
first two draft picks, because it's going to be fun to see where people
end up," Green said. "There's a lot of talent in the draft. In my eyes,
we feel like maybe the deepest draft since LeBron's draft (in 2003)."

NBA Draft basketball prospect Kyrylo Fesenko, of team SK Cherkasy, is

NBA Draft takes place in New York on June 28. 2007. [AP]

The Portland Trail Blazers have the No. 1 pick, and they haven't said
publicly which way they're leaning.

Oden's agent, Mike Conley Sr., said he had not spoken to Portland general
manager Kevin Pritchard since last week. Pritchard has not given any
indication that Oden will be the top choice, the agent said.

"He has not telephoned me or anyone who works for me guaranteeing Greg is
our guy," Conley said.

And if the Trail Blazers were still flip-flopping Wednesday, they weren't
the only ones.

"I'm taking the big guy," Washington center Spencer Hawes said when asked
what he would do. "Look who wins the championships. Nothing against
Kevin, but you just got to look at the backbone of championships."

So then, Oden over Durant?

"I'm not saying that, I'm not going to go that far," Hawes said.
"Conventional wisdom would say that you take the big guy, but that's a
tossup, that's a tough one to say. I can't say on the two individuals,
but next year if it's a similar scenario I guess I go with the big guy.
But I don't know, this year I guess I'm a man divided."

It's not an easy choice. Oden tested better at predraft camp, Durant had
the sharper workout in Portland.

Dominant big men are usually impossible to pass up, and late Wednesday
night ESPN.com reported, citing unidentified sources, the Trail Blazers
had let Oden know that he's their man.

"That's definitely not the case," Conley Sr. said.

Oden has been compared to Bill Russell for his rebounding and shot
blocking, and he led Ohio State to the national championship game even
while failing to regain full strength after surgery on his right wrist.

"You can see why he'd be a No. 1 pick," Durant said. "I think he's one of
the best centers to come out of college. He's quick and agile, he's
7-feet, 250. I've never seen that in a center before."

Players like Durant don't come around often, either. The swingman from
Texas was the college player of the year after averaging 25.8 points and
11.1 rebounds, ranking fourth nationally in both categories. And if he
falls to Seattle at No. 2, he'd make a terrific consolation prize.

"Without question, Kevin Durant's the most talented player in this
draft," Texas A&M point guard Acie Law said. "But if I'm building a
franchise, as most teams at the top of the draft are, you can't pass up a
guy you can just build your team around. Because there's guys in the
league that can score 20, 25 a game, like Kevin Durant can, but you're
not going to find a 7-foot manchild that can just patrol your line for
10, 12 years."

There's much more in this draft beyond Oden and Durant. Law said the top
15-20 players could become stars, setting up plenty of intrigue around
the remainder of the lottery.

The Phoenix Suns were hoping to move up, the Charlotte Bobcats were
possibly open to moving down, and the Trail Blazers were rumored to be
interested in landing a second lottery pick.

Kansas forward Julian Wright (30) scores two of his game-high 23 points
during the first half of their college basketball game against Rhode
Island in Lawrence, Kan., in this Dec. 30, 2006 file photo. Wright is one
of the top prospects for the NBA Draft, to take place in New York on June
28. [AP]

Green was surprised to be called to a Tuesday workout in Phoenix with
Brewer and Noah, even though the Suns aren't scheduled to draft until
well after the lottery. That shows there's interest in players after Oden
and Durant, with the Florida trio hoping to make the Gators the first
school with three top 10 picks in the same draft.

"We're just winners," Brewer said. "We know how to win."

Green was seated next to the draft's unknown, Yi, illustrating how much
the shape of the NBA has changed in the last two decades. The Big East
player of the year from the prestigious program was surrounded by maybe a
dozen media members, while Yi attracted a crowd about triple that.

Not that much could be learned. Speaking through a translator, Yi said
it's hard to compare him to other players in the draft, but that he could
have an advantage over some of them because of his international
experience.

Otherwise, he remains a mystery -- right down to his age. He's listed at
19, but has long been rumored to be older. And the 6-11 Yi wants to
pattern his game like power forwards such as Dirk Nowitzki and Kevin
Garnett, not like countryman Yao Ming, a center.

There are fewer doubts about Oden. He probably would've been the No. 1
pick last year without going to college if not for the NBA's age rule,
which requires American players be 19 years old and a year out of high
school to be eligible for the draft.

The only question now is whether he's still No. 1 -- or if it matters to
him.

"Important? It would be nice," he said. "To play in this league is a
dream of mine. Wherever I go will be nice."

NATO backs US missile plan on eve of Russia talks

Moscow - NATO's secretary-general mounted a stout defense of Washington's
missile shield plan on Monday, the day before meeting Russian President
Vladimir Putin when the issue is likely to top the agenda.

Russia has described United States' plan to place part of its missile
shield in eastern Europe as a threat and the issue has divided European
politicians with some saying it is vital for defense and others saying it
is misguided.

"You don't have to be Einstein to understand that 10 interceptor rockets
don't pose any threat to Russia and the Russian people," NATO's Jaap de
Hoop Scheffer said via an interpreter in a debate on Russia's Ekho Moskvy
radio station.

On Tuesday de Hoop Scheffer meets Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov
and Putin.

He underlined the shield was aimed at shooting down missiles fired by
'rogue states' such as North Korea and Iran, and that Russia also shared
these common enemies.

In echoes of the Cold War, Putin this month said he would order Russia to
aim its missiles back at major European cities if Washington went ahead
with the plan to site elements of the shield near Russia's borders.

"We were enemies and we tried to destroy each other but that era has now
finished," de Hoop Scheffer said on Monday.

The United States wants to place part of the missile shield in Poland and
the Czech republic.

As an alternative to the shield, Russia has also offered the United
States use of a Soviet-built radar station in Azerbaijan. The United
States said it would consider the offer although the Azeri radar station
could not replace the main missile shield.

Soccer boss elected Buenos Aires mayor

(Reuters)
Updated: 2007-06-25 09:16

A millionaire soccer boss from Argentina's center-right opposition was
elected mayor of Buenos Aires in a run-off vote on Sunday, defeating a
candidate backed by President Nestor Kirchner.

With more than 73 percent of the ballots counted, 60.5 percent of voters
supported Mauricio Macri, a congressman and president of the country's
most popular soccer club, while 39.5 percent backed Daniel Filmus,
Kirchner's education minister.

"Change won in Buenos Aires today," Macri told a throng of cheering
supporters. "It's a change that proposes a different kind of politics,
different values."

Macri's victory catapults a leading opposition figure into one of the
country's key political posts, dealing a blow to the Argentine leader
ahead of this year's presidential election.

Highly popular, Kirchner had waded into the contest, hoping to broaden
his power base.

Analysts say the win will likely anoint Macri as the leader of a
fractured opposition struggling to gain ground on the center-left
president in the October 28 presidential race.

"This affirms Macri as the figurehead of the opposition," Joaquin Morales
Sola, a political columnist at the Buenos Aires daily La Nacion, said in
televised comments.

Kirchner has dominated Argentine politics since taking office in 2003,
consolidating power as he won credit for engineering the country's
economic recovery.

BIG LEADS

Public opinion surveys show Kirchner and his wife, a senator, holding
substantial leads in the presidential race, with either expected to win
easily. Neither has said if they will run, but Kirchner frequently hints
his wife may do so.

Macri was widely seen as a potential candidate in the presidential
election before he jumped into the mayor's race. He has hinted it might
be a first step toward a 2011 presidential candidacy.

Kirchner hand-picked Filmus to compete in the race in Buenos Aires, home
to some 2.8 million Argentines and an independent-minded electorate that
frequently votes against national trends.

Macri, 48, hails from one of the country's wealthiest and most
controversial families. His father, business tycoon Franco Macri, is one
of Argentina's richest men whose businesses flourished during the 1990s
under former President Carlos Menem.

Kirchner, who blames Argentina's 2001-2002 economic crisis on neo-liberal
economic policies implemented during the Menem years, had publicly warned
a Macri victory could mark a return of Menem's policies.

In the final days of the campaign, Macri got a public relations boost
from his role as president of the Boca Juniors club, where soccer great
Diego Maradona once starred.

On Wednesday, Boca won Latin America's Copa Libertadores tournament, the
equivalent of Europe's Champions League championship.

Iran: Russia may not let US use Azeri radar

TEHRAN - Russia has indicated it will not allow the United States to use
a radar station in Azerbaijan for missile defense against Iran, an
Iranian foreign ministry spokesman was quoted by the IRNA news agency as
saying on Sunday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin speaks at the St. Petersburg
International Economic Forum June 10, 2007. [Reuters]

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in dispute with the United States over
the location in eastern Europe of a planned American missile defense
system, had offered instead to share a radar site in Azerbaijan.

But Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said Russia
had no intention of letting Washington use the station in Azerbaijan,
which has borders with Iran and Russia.

"It seems Russia does not intend to make decisions that may result in
instability and insecurity in a region that it is located itself in,"
Hosseini told a weekly news conference.

The United States told Russia on Thursday the Kremlin's offer could not
replace its plans to site the missile shield in eastern Europe to counter
any missile launch by Tehran.

The West fears Iran wants to make an atomic bomb but Tehran says its
atomic work is aimed only at generating electricity.

The United States says it seeks a diplomatic solution to the dispute, but
has not ruled out military action. Iran has threatened to strike US
interests around the world and Israel if attacked.

Hosseini said Putin's proposal was discussed with the Russian and
Azerbaijani ambassadors to Tehran.

"Iranian ambassadors to Russia and Azerbaijan have also discussed the
issue with both countries' officials," Hosseini said.

Washington plans to use interceptors in Poland and radar in the Czech
Republic, a configuration Washington says would be ideal for blocking any
missile, particularly from Iran, heading towards the United States and
most of Europe.

Russia has said the US scheme is a threat to its own security and that
the proposed US bases on its doorstep could be converted to more
dangerous uses in the future.

The project has also raised concerns in Iran, which says its missile
program is not designed to threaten the West.

Iran's Shahab-3 missile, with a range of 1,250 miles (2,000 km), is
capable of hitting Israel and US bases in the Gulf, Iranian officials
say. Iran has refused to recognize Israel since its 1979 Islamic
revolution toppled the US-backed Shah.

Chinese Online Class - Lieberman: US should weigh Iran attack

WORLD / America

Lieberman: US should weigh Iran attack

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-11 06:29

WASHINGTON - Sen. Joseph Lieberman said Sunday the United States should
consider a military strike against Iran because of Tehran's involvement
in Iraq.

"I think we've got to be prepared to take aggressive military action
against the Iranians to stop them from killing Americans in Iraq,"
Lieberman said. "And to me, that would include a strike over the border
into Iran, where we have good evidence that they have a base at which
they are training these people coming back into Iraq to kill our
soldiers."

The U.S. accuses Iran of fostering terrorism and Tehran's nuclear
ambitions have brought about international reproach.

Lieberman, the Democratic nominee for vice president in 2000 who now
represents Connecticut as an independent, spoke of Iranians' role in the
continued violence in Iraq.

"We've said so publicly that the Iranians have a base in Iran at which
they are training Iraqis who are coming in and killing Americans. By some
estimates, they have killed as many as 200 American soldiers," Lieberman
said. "Well, we can tell them we want them to stop that. But if there's
any hope of the Iranians living according to the international rule of
law and stopping, for instance, their nuclear weapons development, we
can't just talk to them."

He added, "If they don't play by the rules, we've got to use our force,
and to me, that would include taking military action to stop them from
doing what they're doing."

Lieberman said much of the action could probably be done by air, although
he would leave the strategy to the generals in charge. "I want to make
clear I'm not talking about a massive ground invasion of Iran," Lieberman
said.

"They can't believe that they have immunity for training and equipping
people to come in and kill Americans," he said. "We cannot let them get
away with it. If we do, they'll take that as a sign of weakness on our
part and we will pay for it in Iraq and throughout the region and
ultimately right here at home."

To deal with Iran's nuclear ambitions, Democratic presidential hopeful
Bill Richardson said tough negotiation is called for.

"I would talk to them, but I would build an international coalition that
would promote and push economic sanctions on them," Richardson said.
"Sanctions would work on Iran. They are susceptible to disinvestment
policy. They are susceptible to cuts, economic sanctions in commodities."

On Friday, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said Iran's detention of
at least four Americans is unwarranted but will not stop Washington from
trying to engage Iran on other matters, including its disputed nuclear
program and alleged support of insurgents in Iraq.

In an Associated Press interview, Rice also appeared to cast doubt on
whether the U.S. would take its tentative diplomatic outreach to Iran any
further for now.

The U.S. and Iranian ambassadors in Iraq met last month for the first
public, substantive high-level discussions the two countries have held in
nearly three decades. Although limited to the topic of violence and
instability in Iraq, the talks have been seen as a possible window to
better relations.

Immediately after the meeting in Baghdad, Iran announced plans for
another. But U.S. Ambassador Ryan Crocker said Washington would decide
only after the Iraqi government issued an invitation.

U.S. officials also said they wanted to see Iran follow up on U.S.
complaints that it is equipping and helping insurgents who attack
American forces.

Lieberman spoke on "Face the Nation" on CBS. Richardson was on "Late
Edition" on CNN.

Chinese language - Mass Holocaust grave found in Ukraine

WORLD / Europe

Mass Holocaust grave found in Ukraine

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-06 00:57

A mass grave holding the remains of thousands of Jews killed by the Nazis
has been found in southern Ukraine near the site of what was once a
concentration camp, a Jewish community representative said Tuesday.

The grave was found by chance last month when workers were preparing to
lay gas pipelines in the village of Gvozdavka-1, near Odessa, said Roman
Shvartsman, a spokesman for the regional Jewish community.

The Nazis established two ghettos during World War II near the village
and brought Jews there from what is now Moldova as well as Ukrainian
regions, Shvartsman said. In November 1941, they set up a concentration
camp and killed about 5,000 Jews, he said.

"Several thousand Jews executed by the Nazis lie there," Shvartsman told
The Associated Press.

Efraim Zuroff, director of the Israel office of the Simon Wiesenthal
Center, said the finding was no surprise: "It underscores the enormous
scope of the plans of annihilation of the Nazis and their collaborators
in eastern Europe."

"The scope is enormous, the number of places where murders were carried
out is very large and that is why even now at this point, so late after
the events, graves are still being discovered," he added.

Yitzhak Arad, a Holocaust scholar and a former director of the Yad Vashem
Holocaust Museum, said his research indicated some 28,000 Jews were
gathered in the area from surrounding towns. He said 10,000 of those died
at a rate of around 500 people a day.

Shvartsman said that Jewish community knew about the mass killing but did
not know where the bodies were located.

Anatoly Podolsky, director of the Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies,
said there are believed to be some 250-350 mass grave sites from the Nazi
occupation, during which some 1.5 million Ukrainian Jews are believed to
have been killed including those massacred near their homes and those
deported to camps elsewhere. He said most of the site have been
discovered, many of them since the Soviet collapse of 1991, but others
have not.

"Ukraine was an enormous killing field, hundreds of thousands of Jews
were murdered and the entire region is literally filled with hundreds of
mass graves," Zuroff said.

Ilia Levitas, the head of Ukraine's Jewish Council, put the number of
mass Jewish graves in the country at over 700 and said more than 100 are
without monuments to the victims.

According to Shvartsman, the names of 93 Jews killed at the Gvozsdavka-1
site have been established. He said Jewish community members plan to
conduct studies at the site to identify more victims.

"We must figure out their names. It is our debt before victims and
survivors," he said.

Odessa's chief rabbi, Shlomo Baksht, hopes to fence the site off and
erect a monument to the victims by the end of the year.

Ukraine's Jewish population was devastated during the Holocaust. Babi
Yar, a ravine outside the capital Kiev where the Nazis slaughtered some
34,000 Jews over two days in September 1941, is a powerful symbol of the
tragedy.

About 240,000 Jews were killed by the Nazis in the Odessa region,
according to Shvartsman. He said a mass grave with remains of about 3,500
Jews was found in the region last year.

Baghdad embassy plans turn up online

(AP)
Updated: 2007-06-01 08:27

WASHINGTON - Detailed plans for the new US Embassy under construction in
Baghdad appeared online Thursday in a breach of the tight security
surrounding the sensitive project.

This computer generated architectural rendering recently posted on the
architect's web site reportedly shows the entrance to the residence of
the Deputy Chief of Mission, part of the American Embassy complex in
Baghdad, Iraq, currently under construction. [AP]

Computer-generated projections of the soon-to-be completed, heavily
fortified compound were posted on the Web site of the Kansas City,
Mo.-based architectural firm that was contracted to design the massive
facility in the Iraqi capital.

The images were removed by Berger Devine Yaeger Inc. shortly after the
company was contacted by the State Department.

"We work very hard to ensure the safety and security of our employees
overseas," said Gonzalo Gallegos, a department spokesman. "This kind of
information out in the public domain detracts from that effort."

The 10 images included a scheme of the overall layout of the compound,
plus depictions of individual buildings including the embassy itself,
office annexes, the Marine Corps security post, swimming pool, recreation
center and the ambassador's and deputy ambassador's residences.

US officials said the posted plans conformed at least roughly to
conceptual drawings for the new embassy, which is being built on the
banks of the Tigris River behind huge fences due to concerns about
insurgents' attacks.

Dan Sreebny, a spokesman for the embassy in Baghdad, declined to discuss
the accuracy of the posted images.

"In terms of commenting whether they're accurate, obviously we wouldn't
be commenting on that because we don't want people to know whether
they're accurate or not for security reasons," he said.

Berger Devine Yaeger's parent company, the giant contractor Louis Berger
Group, said the plans had been very preliminary and would not be of help
to potential US enemies.

"The actual information that was up there was purely conjectural and
conceptual in nature," said company spokesman Jeffrey Willis. "Google
Earth could give you a better snapshot of what the site looks like on the
ground."

Some US officials acknowledged that damage may have been done by the
postings and used expletives to describe their personal reactions. Still,
they downplayed the overall risk.

"People are eventually going to figure out where all these places are,
but you don't have to draw them a map," said one senior official,
speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk
about the embassy project.

Few are, and in Baghdad, the construction is under heavy guard and
treated with extreme secrecy. It is off-limits to all but those with
special passes, surrounded by tall, concrete blast walls and impossible
to see except from the air.

The images posted on the Web site show that the $592 million embassy,
expected to be completed in September on prime real estate two-thirds the
size of Washington's National Mall, will be a spacious and comfortable
facility, albeit dangerous.

Identified as the "Baghdad US Embassy Compound Master Plan," the images
show palm-lined paths, green grass gardens and volleyball and basketball
courts outside the Marine post, as well as the swimming pool.

"In total, the 104-acre compound will include over twenty buildings,
including one classified secure structure and housing for over 380
families," the Web site says.

It says the compound will include the embassy building, housing, a PX,
commissary, cinema, retail and shopping areas, restaurants, schools, a
fire station, power and water treatment plants as well as
telecommunications and wastewater treatment facilities.

A US Senate Foreign Relations Committee report last year said embassy
security will be extraordinary: Setbacks and perimeter no-go areas will
be especially deep, structures reinforced to 2.5 times the standard and
five high-security entrances, plus an emergency entrance-exit.

Learn Chinese - Gene therapy used to cure mice blindness

WORLD / Health

Gene therapy used to cure mice blindness

(AP)
Updated: 2007-05-23 15:33

BAR HARBOR, Maine - Researchers at the University of Florida and The
Jackson Laboratory in Maine say they used gene therapy to restore sight
in mice with achromatopsia, a form of hereditary blindness that also
strikes humans.

In a paper published online in Tuesday's edition of Nature Medicine, the
Florida scientists working with Jackson research scientist Bo Chang
describe their use of a harmless virus to deliver corrective genes to
mice with a genetic impairment that deprives them of vision.

The discovery shows that it's possible to target and rescue cone cells,
the most important cells for visual sharpness and color vision in people.

The mice used in the research had achromatopsia, which affects one in
about 30,000 Americans by silencing cone photoreceptors in the retina.
The disease results in nearly complete color blindness and very poor
central vision.

"Cone vision defines whether someone is blind or not," said William
Hauswirth, professor of ophthalmic molecular genetics and a member of the
University of Florida Genetics Institute.

The ability to deliver a gene specifically to cone cells has implications
for all blinding diseases, not just inherited ones, Hauswirth said. "Even
in two very common types of blindness, age-related macular degeneration
and diabetic retinopathy, if you can target cones you might be able to
rescue that vision," he said.

Chang said the mouse with achromatopsia was found about three years ago
while screening many strains of mice for vision problems as part of The
Jackson Laboratory's program to develop new mouse models for human eye
conditions.

Chang and Jackson colleagues then identified the genetic mutation that
caused achromatopsia, while scientists elsewhere were zeroing in on the
analogous human mutation.

Within two months of the gene therapy injection, scientists measured the
electrical activity in the retinas. They found that 19 of the 21 treated
eyes responded positively to therapy; 17 of those 19 had electrical
readings from their retinas on par with those taken in normal mice.

Richard Weleber, professor of molecular and medical genetics at Oregon
Health and Science University, said the Florida-Jackson Lab research is
the first to his knowledge of a cone-targeted gene therapy that restores
function in an animal model when cones are the primary defect.

"This validates the concept that it is possible to deliver a gene therapy
targeting the cone system, and that is incredibly important for a number
of degenerative diseases," said Weleber, who was not involved in the
research.

The research was supported by grants from the National Institutes for
Health, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and other organizations.

Yet child care services are not keeping up with longer and more frequent
deployments, said the report, released to coincide with Mothers' Day in
the United States on Sunday.

Moreover, women get only 6 weeks of leave after the birth of a child, it
found.

"Making sure military mothers have the quality child care, generous
family leave, and access to mental health services they need is key to
their family well-being and our national security," New York Democratic
Rep. Carolyn Maloney said in a statement.

"Not addressing these issues could have serious implications for the
retention of women in the military, and the readiness and effectiveness
of our forces."

The Joint Economic Committee, a bipartisan group of senators and members
of the House of Representatives, used Defense Department figures for much
of the report.

It said that women represent one in seven US military personnel in Iraq,
and that most are in the lowest-paid ranks.

Women make up about 14.3 percent of the active-duty military, according
to the report, and about 40 percent of women in the active-duty force
have children compared with 44 percent of active-duty men.

However, military mothers are much more likely to be single or divorced,
or married to other members of the military who also face deployment.

That leaves grandparents, other relatives or paid caregivers to take care
of young children when parents are deployed or redeployed.

The report, available on the Internet at http://www.jec.senate.gov, said
the military may be stretched to recruit and retain women if it does not
provide better services.

"The military has increased the number of available child care centers,
but the National Military Families Association estimates that the
military is approximately 35,000 short of expected need," it said.
