Arable land used for construction falls

The Ministry of Land and Resources published a survey on changes in
national land utilization in 2004. The survey indicates that arable land
used for construction fell significantly in 2004. 4.017 million MU
(267,800 hectares) of land, 2.176 million MU (145,067 hectares) of which
was arable, was used for construction, a decline of 2.4 million MU
(160,000 hectares) and 1.26 million MU (84,000 hectares), respectively,
or 37% less than last year. This is the first time arable land use for
construction has fallen in the past five years.
